NAMCHI, 24 Oct: Kitam Boys lifted the ongoing Hill’s Open Volleyball Tournament while Namchi Volleyball Association girls lifted the Constituency Level Girls Volleyball Tournament 2011 trophy today at Chuba JHS ground.
In the finals of the Lt. DB Gurung Memorial Hill’s Open Volleyball Tournament played between Kitam Boys and Namchi Volleyball Association, the former emerged victorious with a score of 25-22, 25-23, 27-26.
While in the Lt. Anil Rai Memorial Constituency Level Women’s Volleyball Tournament, the Namchi Volleyball Association girls won the final match played against Tanzi Village.
Minister for Roads and Bridges, Tilu Gurung , present as the chief guest at the finals, in her address highlighted that the Human Resource Development Department under the present government has brought about a lot of infrastructural development in the State. Stating that at present, there are 1477 schools running in Sikkim and more than 1.70 lakh students, she urged all students to gain as much knowledge as possible as they are the pioneers of the future Sikkim.
Minister Gurung also informed that following the earthquake damage in Sikkim, many model houses are to be built under the Rural Housing Mission in Sikkim for which she urged all educated youth and the general public to keep a check to ensure quality work and take the responsibility to lead the society towards a better Sikkim.
President UPF-Sikkim, GM Gurung, in his address said that organizing such events will not only entertain people but also give wider platform to the players to present their skills and talents in different fields. He also commented that Sikkim was lagging behind in games like volleyball and there is no registered association of volleyball in Sikkim yet.
The programme was also addressed by Deputy Director, S Tara Mani Moktan, while HM Chuba JHS, TP Dhungel gave a brief report on the academic performance of Chuba JHS.
A competitive cultural programme in the memory of Lt. AB Gurung was also organised. On the occasion, Hari Gurung, Raj Vir Dal and AV Gurung of Chuba were felicitated by the celebration committee.
Earlier, Minister Gurung also inaugurated 6 rooms in an RCC building of Chuba JHS.
The tournament was organized by the International Non-Violence Celebration Committee, Chuba in association with United Peace Federation of Sikkim marking the occasion of International Non-Violence Day 2011.
