Sikkim pilots progress well at Himalayan Open Paragliding Championship

SOMBARIA’S RINZING DOMA SPARKLES AS THE ONLY WOMAN COMPETITOR IN THIS PRE-WORLD CUP EVENT
GANGTOK, 21 Oct: Three pilots from the Sikkim Paragliding Adventure Sports Cooperative Society Ltd, led by their president Arjun Rai, and comprising of vice president Raju Rai and Rinzing Doma Bhutia, are participating in the ongoing Himalayan Open Paragliding Championship, a pre-World Cup 2011 event underway at Bir/ Billing. The trio has been doing well in the main event, having already qualified through the first round on 15 October.
As per a press communiqué received from the trio, they have competed in 4 tasks of the main event thus far. On 19 October, Raju Rai completed 20km, Arjun Rai 15km and Rinzing Doma Bhutia 7km out of 67.1km total distance.
Interestingly, Rinzing Doma is the only woman pilot from India to compete in this prestigious championship which has brought much attention to adventure sports in Sikkim State and she has been extensively covered in local and national media in Himachal Pradesh.
In a message from Bir, she has thanked the State Government and Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for the Paragliding Capacity Building program through which she received the chance train in the Sport. She has also conveyed her gratitude towards Joint Director, Sports & Youth Affairs, Doma Tshering Bhutia, for her continuous guidance and encouragement even after the capacity building program was over.
She has also thanked her instructor, Jyoti Thakur, for the quality training he imparted to the Sikkim team which is showing considerable results now.
In accordance to the “Sikkim Paragliding Adventure Sports Cooperative Society Ltd” objectives of developing Sikkim as a paragliding destination in India, this participation by local pilots has attracted the much-needed promotion of the Sikkim State.
Vice-president Raju Rai is negotiating with officials and senior pilots of the organising committee to host similar events in Sikkim as well.
