GANGTOK, 15 Jan: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gyaba Gyalshing, West Sikkim, organized a health awareness and checkup programme at Karthok in West Sikkim for farmers. The programme was organized under the NABARD-sponsored Integrated Tribal Development Project, an official press release informs.
The inaugural function was chaired by UK Sharma, Zilla Panchayat member of Timburbong-Karthok and was also attended by Panchayat President and all members of the GPU, Dr. Laxuman Sharma, Programme Coordinator of KVK-Gyalshing, Dr. Biren Subba of Soreng PHC, Bhison Pradhan, Dr. Rinchen Ongmoo and Tulasha Sharma of KVK, staff of Soreng PHC and more than 100 farmers with their families, the release details.
The function was addressed by Passang Lepcha, member of the Farmers Club, who presented the feedback on the project being implemented by KVK and also proposed to form JLG and SHG comprising members exclusively from the Lepcha community.
Dr. Sharma of KVK highlighted the different components of the project and briefed the gathering on the activities taken up and the future strategies of the tribal development project in the village. Dr. Biren Subba in turn spoke on the common diseases prevailing in the villages of Sikkim and appealed to all farmers to frankly discuss health problems during the health check up.
UK Shama, the chief guest, thanked the KVK fraternity for conducting the programme in the village and stressed on the need for health education. He also credited the able leadership of Minister RB Subba, the area MLA, for his efforts to support such programmes. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Panchayat President Bhudhi Maya Lepcha.
The health checkup was taken by around 100 farmers and an awareness programme was also held for women on childcare.
