GANGTOK, 13 Jan: Rajya Sabha MP, Hishey Lachungpa, today urged the people of Sikkim to preserve and promote their cultural heritage and traditions. Mr. Lachungpa was speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural function of Rorathang Maghey Mela 2014 at the river bank of Rorathang in East Sikkim.
In his address, Mr Lachungpa further suggested to connect the Maghey Mela with different tourism activities to make it a popular tourism festival in the state. He added that such activities would help to promote the whole area as a tourism hub.
Stating that the whole valley has immense potential in tourism, he urged the people to take advantage of various tourism opportunities. The state government has prioritized the tourism sector in the state to provide maximum benefits to the people of the state, he added.
While speaking about the opposition Mr Lachungpa said, “SDF is not worried about the upcoming elections as we will come back with a clean sweep. Our focus is on carrying on the work we have started and fulfilling the pending demands of the people”.
The opposition parties go to the people only during elections and instead of listening to them people should prepare a blueprint of the developmental works required in their respective areas, he added.
Sikkim Democratic Front vice-president, KB Chamling, who was present as the guest of honour, said that the Rorathang Maghey Mela was the most popular and oldest Mela in the state but after the flood of 1968, things changed. He congratulated the area MLA and people of the area for reviving the Mela from 2012.
Tourism Minister, Bhim Dhungel, who is also the area MLA, informed that this was the third year of the Mela since its revival and more than 30,000 people have been coming each year.
The inaugural function concluded with the vote of thanks by the president of the organizing committee, Deo Kumar Pradhan.
