VICTIM SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES, RECORDS DYING STATEMENT
GANGTOK, 16 Jan: Pankaj Verma, rushed to hospital with 80% burn injuries late last night, succumbed to his injuries at the Central Referral Hospital here today. Before he breathed his last, he is reported to have recorded his statement with the Magistrate.
The incident, it may be recalled, transpired late Wednesday evening in Tadong here in the home of the in-laws of the victim. Four other persons sustained burn injuries on their hands, it is further informed.
Uday Pratap Verma, the father of the deceased is now alleging that his son was set on fire by his in-laws who first conspired to bring him over to their house. The deceased, it is alleged, was estranged from his wife and in-laws for the past one year.
The deceased, his father contends, met his in-laws at the Ranipool Maghey Mela earlier in the day and was invited over to their home in the evening. The father maintains that it was then they poured kerosene on him and set him alight. He further maintains that this was also detailed by his son in how statement to the Magistrate.
The father adds that his son’s father in-law had beaten him up and ransacked his rented home in Ranipool last year as well, an incident which is currently under trial.
He adds that no one from the in-laws family informed him about the incident and that it was the police which contacted him last night after his son was admitted into hospital.
