GANGTOK, 23 Jan: Two-month skill upgradation training programme on handloom weaving was inaugurated at Lachung, North Sikkim, by both the Pipons of Lachung, Lakpa Tshering Lachungpa and Phuphu Lachungpa on 22 January. The programme was also attended by local gentry and public of the Lachung at Thomchi, DHH complex, Lachung.
The training programme is sponsored by the office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and implemented by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Government of Sikkim.
A press release informs that the weavers for the said training were selected in consultation with the Area MLA, Tshering Wangdhi Lepcha and Pipons of Lachung.
The Pipons and the public of the area were delighted and thankful to the department and government for organizing new kind of handloom weaving on frame looms in their locality, the release mentions.
Deputy Director (North), D.H.H., Mangan, Tshering Dorjee Bhutia informed the weavers and gathering about the programme and the different schemes and programmes being formulated by the central government to up lift the weavers like Health and Life Insurance of the weavers, 10% Subsidy on yarn purchase through Yarn Pass Book, subsidy on transportation and yarn depot, Weavers Credit Card (WCC) etc.
The Master Trainer, Sukdev Sen was invited from Kolkata in consultation with the Weavers Service Centre, Kolkata, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the release adds.
