GANGTOK, 20 Jan [IPR]: A 3-day capacity development programme on disaster management, organized by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) East, in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), for stakeholders of East and North district got underway here in the capital today at Janta Bhawan.
Mayor KN Topgay was present for the inaugural session as chief guest along with Secretary, Land Revenue Department, KS Topay as the guest of honor.
The capacity building programme will deal with Incident Repair System (IRS), Table Top Exercise and Mock Drill.
In his inaugural address, the Mayor thanked the organizers for putting together such an important and vital capacity development programme and also stressed the importance of proper training on how to respond to disasters.
He also expressed disappointment over the absence of representatives from BSNL and other private telecom service providers from such an important workshop, underlining that during the time of disasters, communication and power were of utmost importance and need to be restored at the earliest.
Mr. Topgay also asked the organizers to at least see to it that representatives of BSNL and other telecom service provider attend the 2nd and the 3rd day of the workshop.
The Land Revenue Secretary who also addressed the gathering informed that one should always be prepared to face any disaster and how to respond correctly during such times was of utmost importance.
The inaugural secession saw the resource person from NDMA, BB Gadnayak, give a comprehensive power-point presentation and exercise on Incident Response System to the stake holders from the East and North Districts.
