GANGTOK, 08 Oct: A four-member team of the Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] will be representing the state in the prestigious National Challenger Chess Tournament to be held at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh from 12 to 22 October.
The current top four players of the state - Rakesh Gurung, Sushmita Lama, Thendup Tamang and Rahul Gurung will be representing Sikkim in the tournament. The team will be accompanied by SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal, who will also be serving the tournament as an arbiter.
The team is scheduled to leave for the tournament on 10 October.
Mr Dhakal stated that it is a prestigious tournament which will have the top four players from all the states and different organizations of the country. He further added that this tournament would be a big platform for the local players to face top players of other states. “Our main target in the tournament would be to improve the rating of the local players,” he added.
The SCA general secretary further informed that the state has been continuously participating in this tournament since its formation and has been improving every year. He expressed his confidence that this time again players would definitely improve their rating in the tournament.
The state team has been busy training for the tournament. The SCA president, HS Sharma and other members of the association have conveyed their best wishes to the team.
