GANGTOK, 06 Oct: Sikkim Sangram Parishad has condemned what it sees as a gross violation of its fundamental rights in the manner in which the party was stopped from conducting a public outreach programme in Reshi in West Sikkim on Saturday.
A press release issued by the SSP vice-president Rinzing Namgyal Bhutia informs that the party had written to the DC and SP West seeking permission to hold a “street corner meeting” at Reshi Bazaar on 05 October. Even though the application was submitted on 22 September, no formal response was received and the party then wrote to the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary on 03 October seeking th same permission.
The party contends that they then received ‘verbal permission’ from DC West for the proposed meeting.
On 05 October, however, when the SSP president Nar Bahadur Bhandari and other office bearers of the party reached Reshi, the Sub-Inspector in duty told them they could not go ahead with their meeting since they did not have written permission.
After extensive discussion and arguments, the party, under protest, did not go ahead with its proposed programme.
“This is the gross violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under Indian Constitution and such kind of activities is prevailing under the regime of SDF Govt. We the SSP party earnestly pray and rise above the occasion to the general public of Sikkim to support the SSP party which is above communalism, terrorism and dictatorship of SDF and the SSP party strongly condemn such type of attitude throughout Sikkim,” the release concludes.
