GANGTOK, 08 Oct [IPR]: Minister for Rural Management and Development Department, CB Karki today chaired the meeting of stakeholders on Solid Waste Management in Rural Clusters/ Tourist Destinations.
During the meet held in RMDD conference hall, Joint Secretary (Sanitation), Hissey Yongda in her power point presentation gave an over view on the solid waste management in rural Sikkim. During her presentation various means, methods and programmes on solid waste management done by the department were elaborately described and a few pilot projects of the department to tackle the problem of solid waste management was also shown.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Mr. Karki stated that solid waste management is a big challenge and a responsibility not only of the department but of each and every individual.
“First and foremost, it is important to know about waste and understand its source. If each and every individual including children are educated about waste and its management then the dream of the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling of making Sikkim a zero waste state can be realized”, he said.
Mr. Karki also suggested setting up waste pits at the ward level and expressed hope that people will cooperate in protecting and preserving their surroundings and the environment.
Earlier, the Secretary RMDD, DR Nepal in his opening remarks spoke about solid waste management and also informed about the kind of work the department is undertaking.
The meeting also saw a fruitful interactive session between stakeholders and officials of the department, where the stakeholders spoke and appraised the gathering about the work they are doing in their respective areas and also expressed some of their ideas and suggestions.
