GANGTOK, 07 Oct: Governor of Sikkim, Shriniwas Patil felicitated a six-member Taekwondo team of the Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association [SATA] today at Raj Bhawan.
A press release from Raj Bhawan informs that Trilok Subba [general secretary cum Chief Coach], Savitri Pradhan [vice president], Amit Pradhan, Gangaram Pradhan, Bijoy Gurung, Phurba Sherpa were felicitated for their individual medals and also for bagging the Team Championship in the recently concluded 6th National Taekwondo Poomsae Championship held at Imphal from 20 to 22 September 2013. The sportspersons were also accompanied by SATA president, YB Thapa.
On the occasion, Trilok Subba and YB Thapa briefed the Governor about the activities being carried out by the Association and on the success achieved by Sikkimese participants in the said tournament at Imphal. The Association also apprised the Governor that four players namely, Trilok Subba, Amit Pradhan, Gangaram Pradhan and Savitri Pradhan were selected in the fourteen-member Indian contingent to participate in the 8th World Taekwondo Championship to be held at Bali, Indonesia from 31 October to 02 November 2013. The national contingent also has players from Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Maharastra, Delhi, Mizoram and Manipur.
The Association also apprised the Governor that the players are participating on their own individual expense and no financial aid has been received so far. Forthcoming participations by the Association in upcoming tournaments were also discussed.
The Governor congratulated the entire team for bringing glory and recognition to the State and as a part of goodwill gesture handed over a cheque of Rs 50,000 to the players for their expenses. He also enquired about the problems and challenges being faced by the Association and the medallists. He also assured of all possible help and expressed his best wishes to the sportsmen for their future endeavours, the release mentions.
The delegation on behalf of the Association expressed their gratitude to the Governor for his encouragement and for sparing his valuable time.
