GANGTOK, 08 Oct: The Department of Social Justice, Empowerment and Welfare observed Senior Citizens Week at the Old Age Home being run by the Ishwaramba Samiti Sangh, Jalipool, Ranipool, East Sikkim on 07 October.
As per a press release, the function was attended by GP Upadhyaya [Principal Secretary, Social Justice, Empowerment and Welfare Department], TR Poudyal [Retired Forest Secretary], BK Roka and Dr. Bela Cintury from Senior Citizen Society. During the function, the purpose of organizing the Senior Citizen Week was highlighted by KB Pradhan, [Joint Secretary, Social Welfare Division].
Various problems of the old age home were also discussed and the Principal Secretary assured to look into all of them. He also informed them that their grant has been doubled by the State Government in the current year.
The programme ended with vote of thanks by KK Sewa [Assistant Director of the department].
01 October, every year is celebrated globally as “International Day of Older Persons” to acknowledge the contribution, wisdom and dignity and need of Senior Citizen and to rededicate to their well-being. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India has issued instructions to organize functions, workshops, seminars, awareness camps etc. for awareness among the younger generation about the concerns of senior citizens and to recognize their contribution to the society. The Ministry has also issued directions to observe the ‘Senior Citizens Week’ starting from 01 to 07 October, 2013 and to organize some activities/ programmes during the week.
