GANGTOK, 06 Oct: North Bengal University conferred PhD degrees on four researchers from Sikkim - Bharat Basistha, Sonam Rinchen Lepcha, Sourav Kafley and Bharat Kumar Pradhan - during the 44th Annual Convocation Ceremony of the University held on 05 October in Vidyasagar Manch of the University. The convocation ceremony was chaired by the West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan, who is also the NBU Chancellor.
Dr. Basistha, who hails from Rhenock, completed his PhD in Molecular Biology under the supervision of Dr. Arnab Sen (Department of Botany, NBU). He is currently employed with the Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology as an Additional Director. He is looking after the State Biotechnology hub and is running several DBT and DST funded projects in the State. He is also the nodal officer for the Intellectual Property Right, National Innovation Centre for Sikkim, etc. To his credit, he has number of scientific publications in national and international journals.
Dr. Lepcha is the first Lepcha from Sikkim to obtain a PhD, a press release informs. He completed his PhD Thesis in Plant Taxonomy/ Biosystematics under the supervision of Prof (Dr.) A.P. Das (Department of Botany, NBU). He is from Lower Dzongu and is presently serving as Deputy Director in the Department of Science and Technology where he is also responsible for the Cane Conservation and Ethno-Veterinary projects. He has published several scientific research papers in national journals and has co-authored a book on Sikkim Biodiversity (series II).
Dr. Kafley completed his PhD Thesis under the supervision of Dr. Bhaskar Chakrovorty (Department of Chemistry, Sikkim Government College). His specialization is Organic Synthesis mainly focusing on Green Chemistry. Hailing from Pakyong, he is the first person to obtain PhD degree in Chemistry from Sikkim. At present he is serving as Assistant Professor in Sikkim Government College, Tadong.
Dr. Pradhan also hails from Rhenock and completed his PhD Thesis under the supervision of Dr. Hemant K Badola (GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Sikkim Unit). His area of specialization is on Biodiversity Conservation. He is working as a Biodiversity Survey Expert in the Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management Project in Forests, Environment and Wildlife Management Department. He has numerous scientific publications in peer-reviewed national and international journals, books, etc. to his credit and has been working on the ethno-botanical aspect of Lepcha, Limboo and Bhutia tribes of Sikkim for the past many years. His work on traditional Lepcha medicine has been filmed by a Berlin-based Television Production Company and has gained popularity all over Europe.
