GANGTOK, 22 May: International Biodiversity Day was celebrated in Pangthang Junior High School today. The programme was organized by East Wildlife Division, Department of Forest Environment and Wildlife Management on the theme ‘Sikkim- An Island in the Sky’.
The programme was chaired by Headmistress Pangthang Junior High School, Donkala Thondup.
Also present were Nima Wangdi Tamang CF [WL], Usha Lachungpa, Additional Director State Biodiversity Board [SBB], Dichen Namdul ACF [WL, East], Nisha Subba ACF [WL, HQ], Samdup Bhutia ACF [WL, FWS], Peggyla Venchungpa ACF [SBB], Bharat Kumar Pradhan, Scientific & Technical Assistant [SBB], Sonam Norden Bhutia ACF [WP], Miss Shewani Pradhan ACF [Silviculture], Forest department staffs, school students, teachers and Pangthang EDC members.
A press release informs that the programme started with a presentation by Usha Lachungpa on Biodiversity of Sikkim and a message on conservation of Biodiversity. The school students also participated in a quiz competition on biodiversity. The students were made aware of the presence of diverse species in the water ecosystem through a movie clipping.
Donkala Thondup talked about the importance of conserving nature and keeping the surroundings clean. Stressing on every living being’s right to live, she spoke against hunting animals for sport.
NW Tamang also shared with the students, ways of conserving the biodiversity and emphasized on the protection of all species, the release adds.
