WE HAVE LOST VERY GOOD TEACHERS AT SIKKIM UNIVERSITY

Letter:
With reference to your report titled “Faculty allege irregularities in SU recruitment process” of 28 February 2012, we, on behalf of all the students of Sikkim University (Social Sciences), would like to tell you that whatever they have said about selection committee failure in providing fair selection of associate/ assistance professors’, we cannot opine, but we can say that we have lost many good teachers. We can’t say that the committee has selected not good teachers, but we can’t stop ourselves from saying that they have ignored very good teachers. Most of them are very much supportive to us, they often encourage all the students whether they are from a particular department or not. Apart from teaching regular classes or from syllabus, they taught us or tried to make us able to write other national competitive examinations. Even without getting extra pay for their classes to students, they taught us very hard. But now we don’t get that kind of encouragement, exposure or classes for our mental development, which is really going to become negative aspect of the selection committee’s decision. God knows on what basis they didn’t get selected for permanent lectureship in our university. It might be because we, the students of Sikkim University, don’t have the fortune to have those very good teachers. We even don’t know the process of selection but if we would have got the chance to choose our own teachers, we wouldn’t have lost so many good teachers of ours.

  3. I hope that the previous comment is not from a teacher at the university. To think that students can be instigated, while it might be possible, is not the disparaging attitude one hopes to find in people either teaching at the univ or even looking after the administration of it. It is natural for students to respond emotionally, but for people responsible for education [and am still hoping that previous comment is not from someone at the univ] to comment so dismissively about them is disturbing

  5. Really i so agree with the third opinion. Hopefully its no teacher doing that. and hopefully no teacher has urged them to do it also, and hopefully the students have come out on there own. it is also learnt that some students left after taking admission cos they were not satisfied with the teaching there ...well looks like they are not one of them. we all fervently hope that the newly selected ones will be able to fill in the shoes of those leaving !!!
