Social worker conferred Dr Ambedkar Distinguished Service National Award


GANGTOK, 19 Dec: Geeta Ruchal, a social worker from Gangtok, was conferred with the prestigious Dr Ambedkar Distinguished Service National Award- 2011 by Bharatiya Dalit Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi on the occasion of the 27th National Conference of Dalit Writers held on 11-12 December. She was conferred with this award in recognition of her commendable literary, social and cultural service. She was presented with a shawl, certificate and award.

Sharing her experiences during a press conference today, 47-year-old Ms Ruchal mentioned that she was greatly inspired by her mother, late Kamala Gazmer, towards social work to help out the needy and suppressed section of the people. She mentioned that she has been engaged in different social work since her teenage years.
She expressed that she has been constantly encouraged and fully supported by her husband and two sons to continue to work for the needy. She mentioned that support and encouragement from her family has helped get her to where she is today.
“I have never expected any award for my work and I have never done any work to receive any award, but this prestigious award conferred to me has really inspired me to continue my good work and even encouraged me to do more for the society”, Ms Ruchal expressed.
While sharing her future plans, she mentioned that it was difficult to work alone in many situations and is planning to form an NGO with some likeminded people which will work for the society’s underprivileged.
