Cabinet defers decision on State Civilian Awards

GANGTOK, 16 Dec: Reports appearing in a section of the media concerning the State Civilian Awards have been termed as incorrect by officials. Sources inform that though there is a move to organize such a programme to honor eminent citizens of the State, no decision on it has been yet by the state government. Neither has there been any date fixed for the programme nor have the names of personalities been shortlisted for conferment of the award.

Official sources inform that the Cabinet had discussed the issue and that the Cultural Affairs and Heritage Department had in fact put up a proposal on it for consideration of the Cabinet. However, the Cabinet has not taken any decision yet on the issue. It is informed that the Cabinet deferred the proposal put up by the department.
The department had sought approval for Rs. 76.72 lakh from the State government to conduct the State Civilian Award 2011 programme to recognize and honour those individuals who have contributed significantly towards the cause of the state in the field of literature, politics, sports and socio-cultural activities etc. No official reason has been forwarded for the deferment of its approval.
The state government, had, in fact, initially desired that the programme be held in the month of September, but it had to be postponed due to the earthquake of 18 September and the subsequent massive damages incurred by the state. Though there had been talk of holding the programme in December, it is now unlikely that this will be the case with the State government all due to shut down from next week with a string of holidays. The Cabinet too has to approve the proposal of the department.
A list of 43 names, it is informed, were put up before the state government  for endorsement who were to be honoured with a memento, certificate of appreciation, a shawl and a medal. A cash component is also included, it is informed.
