GANGTOK, 16 Sept [IPR]: Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti, a voluntary organisation, is organising a free plastic surgery camp for cleft lip, palate and burn cases from 16 to 22 Sept at Central Referral Hospital, 5th Mile Tadong. The camp is being organized in collaboration with Smile Train India, Agra, along with support of Health Care, Human Services and Family Welfare Department, Central Referral Hospital and NHPC Teesta Stage V.
Minister for Human Resource Development, NK Pradhan was present at the inaugural session as the chief guest. In his address, he said that Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti is doing a tremendous job by trying to solve the problems of the physically challenged people of Sikkim and such camps will help benefit the whole society. The Minister thus urged the patients to make optimum use of this free camp.
The President of Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti, Droupadi Ghimiray informed that earlier, screening was held in the State while the surgery had to be done at the Smile Train India, Agra but from this year onwards patients can avail of both the facilities in the state itself.
So far, 150 patients have benefited from these facilities. She mentioned that 56 cleft lip palate and 25 burn patients were identified and admitted at the hospital from 15 Sept. Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr Satya Saraswat, a member of Smile Train India, Agra, and his team will be conducting the surgical procedure here in the state.
Medical Superintendent of Central Referral Hospital, Dr S. Singh, in his address mentioned that this kind of camp is an endeavour to provide services and facilities to the needy. He also asked patients to come forward and avail of the same.
Patron of Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti, Tempo Bhutia, while highlighting the objective of the organisation said that the Samiti along with Sarva Siksha Abhiyan had identified these patients who will be undergoing surgery.
Secretary, Health Care, Human Services and Family Welfare, Dr Kumar Bhandari, and Dr Satya Saraswat also spoke on the occasion.
