GANGTOK, 20 Sept: Secretary, Information and Public Relations Department, KS Topgay, today informed that relief and restoration works are being carried out on a war footing across the State in response to the damage caused by the Sunday earthquake.
Power supply to the capital town and surrounding areas has been restored, while in some major towns like Rangpo, Singtam and Mangan, power has been restored partially and work continues, he added.
About the power supply situation in South and West districts, Mr. Topgay informed that today, the Power Department was able to restore 60 KV electricity supply for the two districts. Jorethang in South Sikkim, however, continues to live in darkness because slides along the Melli-Jorethang road have caused substantial damage to power supply lines. Power supply to Rhenock and Rongli has been restored in East District.
About road connectivity, Mr. Topgay informed that the Mangan-Singtam road via Dikchu has been cleared and restored [although this was blocked again today]. The other roads cleared are Gangtok-Ravangla, Gangtok-Gyalshing, Gangtok via Pakyong to Rongli, Lingda to Legship, Namchi-Ravangla via Damthang and Namchi-Jorethang.
Roads still blocked and under clearance are Lingmoo-Yangyang, Temi via Ravangla-Namchi, Kitam-Namchi, Namchi to Rangpo via Namthang, Soreng-Sombaria and Uttarey-Naya bazaar, respectively.
Mr. Topgay further mentioned that water supply in rural areas are still disrupted, whereas in respect to Gangtok and surrounding areas supply was being met in small quantities but was not adequate as supply lines have been damaged extensively.
