GANGTOK, 05 May: A 20-member squad of Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club [SHSC] is all set to participate in the Jan Nayak Kapuri All India Football Tournament, underway at Moinul Haque Stadium in Patna, Bihar from 02 May. The SHSC has been placed directly in the quarter-final round and will be playing its first match on 10 May.
The team comprises of young players below 20 years of age led by Bhaichung Bhutia as the team captain and Ongdup Lepcha as vice-captain. The team has Pranay Subba as the coach and Sonam Dorjee Tamang as manager.
The SHSC team also has one player from Boys’ Club and 2 players from SAI Namchi for the tournament.
During the practice session at Paljor Stadium this morning, Sikkim Football Association general secretary, Menla Ethenpa expressed his best wishes to the team on behalf of SFA. “It is a prestigious tournament and SFA is happy that SHSC is playing in such a tournament”, he said. He added that proper management and performance of the club in a short span of time has earned them the opportunity to play in this tournament.
Mr Ethenpa further stated that the players of the club have to understand the importance of this opportunity and give their best to make Sikkim proud. Since the team is representing the state they should maintain discipline and play with proper team work and coordination, he added.
SHSC president, Tenzing Lamtha expressed his gratitude to the SFA for giving this opportunity to the SHSC to play in the tournament. He also thanked Boys’ Club and SAI Namchi for releasing their players to play for the club’s team.
“The tournament would give huge exposure to local players and give them the opportunity to display their game and skills at the national level”, said Mr Lamtha further adding that such exposure would make the players of SHSC tougher and add to their experience.
Team coach Mr. Subba stated that the team is all set to play their best game in the tournament and the only challenge for the team is playing in the extreme heat in Patna. The squad consists of very young players and the club has high hopes that they will perform well in the tournament. The team will be leaving for the tournament on 07 May.
