GANGTOK, 29 Sept [IPR]: The state level workshop on “Joint Forest Management for Sustainable Management of Natural Resources – Livelihood: Ecotourism: Biodiversity” will be held on Monday at Saramsa Garden, Ranipool. The workshop is being organized by the Department of Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management, Govt. of Sikkim and JICA assisted Sikkim Biodiversity and Forest Management Project [SBFP].
The workshop is intended to strengthen and spread Participatory Management of Natural Resources in the state of Sikkim through collaboration of members of Joint Forest Management Committees/Eco-development Committees, NGOs, Panchayat, Forest Department and other Government Departments and Institutions. The main purpose of the workshop is to create a common platform for various schemes/programs (Forest Development Agency, Green India Mission, Integrated Watershed Management Programs, JICA assisted Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management Project etc) to strengthen the livelihood, ecotourism and biodiversity conservation activities implemented under by the Department of Forest, Environment & Wildlife Management with the participation of local people including youth and women. Similar workshops will be organised at Division, Sub division and Range Level in state for widespread impact.
The workshop will also showcase the achievements made so far in Joint Forest Management, Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management, Ecotourism and Organizational Development/Infrastructure Development and upcoming activities in Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management Project (SBFP).
Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation; Forests Environment and Wildlife Management; Science and Technology and Climate Change and Mines and Geology Department is scheduled to attend the workshop as the chief guest and will address the gathering on achievements and way forward to strengthen participatory management of natural resources through JICA assisted Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management Project (SBFP).
The workshop which will be attended by over 600 people will include presidents and members of JFMCs/EDCs, forest department officials, journalists from print medias and electronic channels, NGO representatives and Community Organizers from all over the state.
Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management Project period is for 10 years, beginning from 2010-11 to 2019-20 and is being implemented in North, South, West and East districts through 26 Forest Ranges covering 180 JFMCs/EDCs. Biodiversity conservation and livelihood development will be achieved through project components such as: Forest and Biodiversity Conservation, Promotion of Ecotourism, Joint Forest Management and Organizational Strengthening of the Forest Department.
