Consumer Protection Council reiterates need for wider awareness on rights


GANGTOK, 19 Feb: A meeting of the District Consumer’s Protection Council of East Sikkim was convened here at District Administration Centre [East] on Saturday, chaired by the DC [East], D Anandan and also attended by ADC [East], officials from Food and Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department and Urban Development & Housing Department, BDOs and members of the council.
The meeting discussed various issues pertaining to the Consumer Protection Act and ways and means to generate wider awareness about the Act and other related issues.
The meeting has decided to hold the Council meeting twice a year and convene awareness meetings at the block level every month in a move to create awareness on the consumer rights among the rural population. The meeting also decided to take strict action against black marketing and keep a check on prices from time-to-time. The meeting stressed upon creating mass awareness among the general mass through different mediums and through wide publicity.
The District Collector suggested that the concerned departments and agencies ensure that no consumer is deprived of his/ her rights and overpricing curtailed. The DC also suggested that Council members encourage people to come forward in case their rights are violated or they are being cheated.
During the meeting, officials and members of the Council also placed their suggestions and views on different subjects.
