GANGTOK, 20 Feb: Twenty-five members of the opposition party from Amba Gram Panchayat Unit in East Sikkim have joined the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front party during a meeting chaired by the Rhenock area MLA and Tourism Minister, Bhim Dhungel on Sunday. An SDF press release issued by the general secretary [publicity], TN Dhakal informs that these opposition party members were officially inducted in the SDF party by offering khadas by the area MLA.
Among the newly inducted members, Phurba Lepcha had already served the party as a central working committee member and is also an active social worker, the release mentions. Addressing the meeting, Mr Lepcha informed that he had not found any clear programme and direction while working in the opposition party for 2 years. He further added that they have rejoined since the party is pro-people.
In his address, the area MLA spoke about the huge possibilities and opportunities in the tourism sector in the state and further informed that the state government has lots of programme for tourism development in the state. Stressing that local people should take full benefit of these opportunities in the state, Mr Dhungel encouraged the local people of Amba GPU to come forward to start home stays to be self-reliant, the release adds.
Area MLA also visited the beneficiaries of quality goats distributed by the state government to inspect their status.
