Sikkim Royal Sports Academy, a community-based initiative powers along

GANGTOK, 14 Aug: Sikkim Royal Sports Academy (SRSA), established by the local community of Development Area, Upper Sichey and Lower Burtuk in 2012 with an aim to inculcate sports and recreational activities amongst the youth population in the locality has added another feather to its cap by organizing various activities to commemorate the 68th Independence Day.
Apart from adopting the TNHSS school ground, developing the existing infrastructure there and maintaining the nine-a-side ground in coordination with the school administration, Sikkim Royal Sports Academy, has in the past two years held coaching camps for a number of youth in different disciplines like Tae-Kwon-Do, Archery, Cricket, Athletics and mainly Football. Presently around 80 children are part of the programme.
“Children nowadays do not have access to open playgrounds and parks where they can explore their talents and be trained. Thus we as members of an aware civil society decided on this community approach to give our children the much needed exposure to sporting activities,” stated president, SRSA, Dr. SK Dewan speaking to NOW! today.
It may also be informed here that SRSA has since its establishment coached and trained a number of youths in the area who are now playing successfully in the A and B-Division clubs in the state. Many children have also been selected for camps outside the state and have gone for recruitment in national level clubs elsewhere.
“This is a programme entirely initiated by the local community. Locals belonging to different occupations irrespective of their financial status have donated to this cause. We are not limiting ourselves to train the children in sports alone; community based initiatives like cleanliness drives, plantation drives, awareness meetings and part-time counseling are also being carried out by the members of the academy,” states Uday C Rai, a member of the SRSA executive committee.
He further informed that this year during the Independence Day celebrations at TNHSSS ground on 15 August, SRSA has organized an Interschool Football tournament for both boys and girls and also an Open Archery Tournament. There are five girl teams and 11 boy teams participating in the interschool football tournament while five different teams are participating in the Archery tournament, the finals of which will be played on Independence Day.
The prize and trophy for the winners of the interschool football tournament (Boys) has been sponsored in the name of the academy’s founder member, Late Diwa Subba while the winners of the interschool football (girls) team will receive a cash prize that comprises 50 percent of the money that has been collected by the academy through various sponsorships.
It was also said today that the interschool football being organized by SRSA was special since it is usually the state government run schools that have playground facilities, however, the tournament here had invited a number of private schools for participation which was a welcome initiative for those schools deprived of sporting facilities.
Similarly, the winners of the archery tournament which includes categories like Recurve, Compound and the Indian Round will be awarded trophies, medals and cash prizes sponsored by SRSA members. The academy also thanked private organizations like Allen’s Kitchen, Agarwal’s Fast Food, Roll House, Triptis and Narayan Das for sponsoring the tournament.
The president also said today that many young lives in the state was being lost to social evils like drug- alcohol addiction, HIV/AIDS and suicides and this vulnerability amongst the youth was being highlighted during the training sessions  by the trained coaches, councilors and teachers who are all part of the community based organization.
“These children come to the ground everyday where they start experiencing the magic and beauty of sports. Our intention is not just to inculcate the importance of sports in ones life but for one to be a good citizen of society,” added the president, Dr. SK Pradhan.
On I-Day, the finals of the interschool boys’ football tournament will be played between TNHSSS and Baha’i School, Saramsa while the girls interschool football tournament will be played between Rongyek JHS and Tadong SSS.
