MANGAN, 17 Aug: On the occasion of the 68th Independence Day celebration at Passingdang in Upper Dzongu, North Sikkim, awards for excellence in various fields were presented to seven persons of the area.
Kinga Lepcha was declared the Best Health Department official, Gyatso Lepcha for Promoting Best Home Stay, Ong Tshering Lepcha as the Best Footballer, BK Gazmer as the Best Headmaster, Samsay Lepcha as the Best Mother of the Year, Choden Lepcha as the Best Progressive Farmer and Ongmit Lepcha as the Best Teacher.
The celebration organised at Passingdang Secondary School was attended by Deputy Speaker cum Dzongu MLA Sonam Gyatso Lepcha as the chief guest accompanied by Chairman Sikkim Milk Union, Choden Lepcha; SDM Dzongu, G Pega; GVA Dzongu, Tshering Gyatso Bhutia and other officials from BAC Passingdang.
The celebration started with the March Past by the students of Passingdang SS followed by the welcome speech presented by Headmaster BK Gazmer. The Independence Day message from the Governor was read out by SDM Dzongu, G Pega while the GVA Dzongu, Tshering Gyatso Bhutia read out the message of the Chief Minister.
The Zilla Panchayat, Safo-Passingdang GPU in his speech highlighted the demand pertaining to the up gradation of Passingdang secondary school to senior secondary level, carpeting of road from Sangakalang to Passingdang, one girls hostel in Passingdang and ambulance service at PHC in the area. He also complained about the ambulance driver of Passingdang PHC who has been absent from duty for the last five years vehicle.
A colourful cultural programme was also hosted by the students of Lingthem JHS, 4th Mile Primary School, Hee-Gyathang SSS, Ruklu Primary School and Mayal Lyang School. Different sports events were also conducted as part of the celebration.
The Minister Mr Lepcha announced the construction of Munsolong Park at Phidang in Lower Dzongu and the construction of a bridge between Sakyong and Pentong in Upper Dzongu which will be one of the highest bridges in the world. He further added that since Dzongu has been made a sub-division the area would see more development.
Later in the day, the final match of the Independence Day Football tournament was played between Sangdong and Veterans Passingdang which was won by the latter in a penalty shootout by 4-3 goals. The winners were awarded cash prize of Rs. 30,000 with trophy while the runners-up were awarded Rs. 15,000 with trophy.
