NAMCHI, 17 Aug [IPR]: The 68th Independence Day was celebrated amidst much gaiety at Namchi today. The chief guest for the event was Minister of Roads & Bridges & Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department, GM Gurung. Also present were Chairpersons of different departments, DC (South) Prabhaker Verma, ADM (South) Kapil Meena, SDM (HQ) Samdup Bhutia alongside HODs of various departments, representatives from SDFA, school children and general public.
The hoisting of the national flag was followed by singing of the national anthem and inspection of the parade by the chief guest. DC (South) welcomed the gathering and also highlighted the achievements of the country. He further read out the message of the Governor on the occasion. Similarly, ADM (South) read out the I-Day message given by the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
Addressing the gathering the chief guest informed regarding the rich history of Sikkim and highlighted the state's accomplishments since it became a part of India. He said that the message of I-Day celebration is to become responsible citizens of the country and also to work towards development of the state. Mr. Gurung further spoke about various developmental schemes and scholarship opportunities available for students.
The Minister thanked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving prominence to Sikkim in the field of organic farming and stressed that the citizens of Sikkim should advance positively in this direction.
The celebration also saw felicitation of Government employees from various departments namely D Saran-D. Kalikotey (LR & DM Department), Bhim Bahadur Rai (LR & DM Department), Des Bahadur Rai (LR & DM Department) and Ongda Lepcha (HRDD). In march past the best contingent award for girls went to New Light Academy, Namchi while the best contingent award for boys went to Namchi Senior Secondary School. Likewise, the best band display went to Namchi Girls Senior Secondary School.
The daylong event also witnessed the finals of the 68th Independence Day football celebration organized by SDFA (South District Football Association) where SAI, Namchi emerged winner against Siniolchu Football Club of Namchi. The winners were awarded Rs. 1 lakh along with trophy and the runner up team was awarded Rs. 50,000 along with trophy.
