NAMCHI, 16 Sept: A huge shortage of beds at the South District Hospital here is forcing the hospital authorities to turn away patients. Helpless patients now occupy the corridors and any empty space available in the hospital.
With a spike in the seasonal viral infections, the number of patients is increasing and with the dengue outbreak the district hospital equipped with 100 beds is struggling to cope.
Mani Kr. Rai of Tokal Bermiok informed that he was running a high fever and got admitted in the hospital. After waiting for hours for a bed, he has now found himself a space in the corridor of the Male Medical Ward. There are many others like him facing the same problem.
According to hospital sources, more than 250 patients come to the hospital everyday from the different parts of South and West District. The hospital however has only 100 beds to which they added some more by setting up beds in other rooms. It is informed that Namchi District Hospital has placed a demand for 200 beds to the concerned authority. The private rooms, on the other hand, are lying vacant and it was informed that these rooms have already been booked.
The CMO informed that there is no such booking system and has instructed the person in-charge to correct the same.
The District hospital is also facing other shortages like staff, equipment, proper laboratory and other facilities to run the hospital properly. The hospital also needs doctors, paramedics, pharmacists, radiographers, nurses and administrative staff.
Doctors at the hospital informed that there is shortage of proper equipment needed for surgery which was limiting their ability to serve patients adequately.
