Phase-2 of Sikkim State Open Badminton C’ship begins

GANGTOK, 13 Sept: More than 250 players will be participating in the open and veterans categories of the 25th edition of Sikkim State Open Badminton Championship 2013 which started today here at Paljor Stadium indoor gymnasium hall. The inaugural function had the Roads and Bridges Minister, RB Subba as the chief guest. The championship is being organized by Badminton Association of Sikkim.
It may be mentioned here that owing to the large number of participants this year, the championship is being held in two different phases. The championship has already covered events for U-13 singles [Boys & Girls], U-16 singles and doubles [Boys & Girls] and U-19 singles and doubles [Boys & Girls] in the first phase held from 23 to 25 August.
Now, in the open and veterans’ categories there are total nine events in the championship, which will end on 15 September. This time the championship has Veterans’ 55 plus men’s singles and doubles. These categories have been introduced this time owing to the increasing number of participants in the veterans’ category.
In his inaugural address, the Minister said that the state government has given priority to sports and urged young sportspersons to take full advantage of these opportunities to excel in their respective field. He also congratulated BAS for the silver jubilee celebrations and for promoting and developing badminton in the state.
The inaugural function of the championship was followed by the first and second rounds of matches. The inaugural day also had the UD&HD Minister, DB Thapa as the guest of honour. The valedictory function of the championship will be held on 15 September.
