CHUNTHANG-LACHUNG ROAD EXPECTED TO TAKE 4 MORE DAYS TO CLEARMANGAN, 18 Oct: The Chungthang-Lachung road axis in North Sikkim, blocked by a rash of landslides ever since the 18 September Earthquake, is expected to be cleared for traffic over the next four days.
Personnel of the Border Roads Organsiation and the army have thus far managed to restore the road up to Bhim-Nala, around 7 km from Chungthang towards Lachung. Here, a 500 feet stretch of the road formation has been washed away.
The Mangan-Saffo and Salim Pakel roads are also still blocked and restoration works are underway. The Mangan-Bey road in Upper Dzongu is also under repairs but there is no intimation yet on by when they will be cleared for traffic.
The Road & Bridges Minister, RB Subba, visited North Sikkim yesterday to check the condition of the roads here. He was accompanied by the North Zilla Adhakshya, Khamsoong Lepcha, and district officials. The Minister inspected the slide at Bhim-Nala where he interacted with BRO officials. The Minister also visited Lachen and stopped over at Chungthang where he interacted with the affected people.
