GANGTOK, 19 Oct [IPR]: Minister for Commerce & Industries, Neeru Sewa, visited various government industries and district industries centers yesterday and inspected the damages caused by the 18 September earthquake. The Minister was accompanied by Secretary Industries, KN Bhutia, and other officials from the Industries Department.
The Minister visited Government Food Preservation Factory at Singtam and inspected the infrastructural damages where the Managing Director informed that they produce 5 metric tonnes of pickle per month and 5 metric tonnes of juices per day.
Ms Sewa also visited the newly set up pure water bottling plant which is estimated to produce about 8000 bottles per day and its maximum retail price would be Rs 17/- per one litre bottle. She also tested the water and certified the new production of the factory, Singtam.
The Minister directed the officials to evaluate the damages and submit a proposal to the government for the beautification of surrounding areas of the factory as well.
The Minister then visited the Temi Tea Estate where a two storied bungalow, which is around 126 years has been totally damaged. She also visited the production centre at the tea factory and the temporary relief camps arranged by the Estate management for the labourers.
The Manager, MP Chamling briefed the Minister about the damages caused by the quake.
Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms Namchi, District Industries Centre, Jorethang, and mini industrial units like Sunnis Masala factory were some of the other places that the Minister visited. The officials and entrepreneurs of the Jorethang DIC also put forward their grievances to the Minister during the visit.
On her visit to DHH, Weaver’s Centre at Melli, South Sikkim the Minister informed that in order to provide training facility to the people living in far-flung areas the department will be organizing mobile training programmes in cluster manner.
A report of the visit will be prepared and submitted to the government, it is informed.
