GANGTOK, 16 Aug: Bhaichung’s United Sikkim Football Club [USFC] lifted the Independence Day Football Tournament for Chogyal Sir Tashi Namgyal Memorial Cup- 2011 here at Paljor Stadium yesterday. I-Day provided a double-whammy for the Club which had also fielded a team for the I-Day tournament in Namchi and has won that Cup as well.
In Gangtok, USFC defeated Langsning SC of Shillong 2-1 in a closely played contesting match. The local club received good crowd support from the packed stadium.
Among the spectators were Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh and Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling.
The teams were evenly matched and played neck-to-neck right from start. The first success came for USFC, when in the 20th minute, Gobind Singh scored a beautiful goal. The first half was inching towards closing 1-0 in USFC’s favour, when during the injury time, Malsoma Changte scored the equaliser for Langsning SC.
The second half became more crucial for both teams, and they made constant attacks.
Then in the 77th minute, Quinton Norman Jacobs scored for USFC.
During the match, the spectators were greatly impressed and appreciated the saves made by the Langsning goalkeeper, Larry Diengdoh, who also received the Man of the Final Match trophy.
The match, however, belonged to USFC and the club registered its first tournament victory of the season on its very first casting.
The Governor and the CM handed over the trophies along with cash prize of Rs 25,000 to the winners and Rs 15,000 to the runners-up.
Speaking to NOW! the proud USFC captain, Nim Tshering Lepcha, expressed his happiness over winning the tournament and lifting the prestigious trophy on his debut outing as the USFC captain.
He expressed his satisfaction and happiness over the performance and said that everyone delivered throughout the tourney.
He also congratulated the players, coaching team and management of the club on this victory and assured to put the best effort effort in future tournaments to take the club to the top. He also especially congratulated and thanked the club co-owner, Bhaichung Bhutia, Chief Coach, Rosario Stanley, Senior Manager, Arjun Rai on the first victory of the club in the season.
Next, the club is scheduled to leave next week to play friendly matches with East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in Kolkata and will also be playing the qualifying matches of the Federation Cup against ONGC, Southern Samity and Royal Wahingdoh FC Shillong at Kolkata next month.
