GANGTOK, 17 Aug: Mohan Pradhan, author of well-received titles, ‘100 Sikkim Himalayan Orchids’ and ‘100 North East Indian Orchids’, will attending the 2011 National Cymbidium Orchid Show of Australia to be held in Adelaide on 20 and 21 August as a special guest.
This is the largest orchid show in Australia attended by all the prominent hybridizers, nurseries and wholesalers from mainland Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the Netherlands.
Mr. Pradhan has been instrumental in setting up of a collaborative group of prominent Cymbidium hybridizers from Australia, India, Thailand and New Zealand, it is informed.
He has been undertaking a joint effort in Cymbidium breeding with prominent hybridizers from Australia and USA for the last couple of years to produce new varieties that are specific to the growing conditions and markets of India.
He had also been invited in 2010 as a speaker at the Cymbidium National Conference in California, USA, to make a presentation on the Cymbidium Orchid Species of the Sikkim Himalayas and was a member of the jury at the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show in March 2011.
Mr. Pradhan is a member of the Species Survival Commission, International Union for the Conservation of Natural Resources (IUCN), Glans, Switzerland and also a Life Member of the American Orchid Society.
He is also credited with the creation and registration for the first Orchid Hybrid ‘Cattleya Sikkim Himalaya Pride’ in 1999 from the State of Sikkim with the International Registration Authority for Orchid Hybrids of RHS in London, an official communiqué informs.
