GANGTOK, 17 Aug: Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded that the SDF Government bring a Bill in the State Legislative Assembly to revoke the repealed Sikkim Income Tax Manual of 1948 arguing that only this would “provide solace” to the people of Sikkim including members of old business community. Article 371F of the Constitution should be invoked to pass the bill in the Assembly, an SPCC press release issued today.
The Congress here has also reiterated its demand that the State Government make public, what it contends to be a “Secret Agreement” between the Union Finance Minister and the Chief Minister on the implementation of the Direct Central Taxes in Sikkim and the exemption accorded to the Sikkimese.
It has quoted media-reports on the Union Finance Minister declaring that there will be no more tax-free zones in the country to justify the apprehension of the Congress party that the exemption granted to Sikkim Subjects was “just an eyewash”.
