GANGTOK, 24 Nov [IPR]: The National Level Special Handloom Expo’ 2013 was inaugurated today by the area MLA, Dorjee Namgyal Bhutia, at the roof top of Kanchanjunga Shopping Plaza for the period of twenty days. He was accompanied by the Secretary Commerce and Industries, PT Euthenpa, Director, Directorate of Handicraft and Handloom, Ganga D. Pradhan and other officers and staff of the Directorate.
The Expo has been organized by Sikkim Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd and sponsored by Office of the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
During the function the chief guest, Mr. Dorjee visited all the displayed stalls from all around the country. A large contingent of weavers, self help groups and cooperative societies from Manipur, Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Sikkim are participating in the expo.
The objective of the expo is to provide a marketing platform and is expected to generate awareness and also to create employment opportunities in the handloom weaving sector. The live demonstration and theme pavilion highlighting the exquisite handloom products from all over the country are highlights of the event. The expo will continue till 10 December 2013.
