GANGTOK, 25 Nov: Members of Denzong Welfare Association, Gangtok, led by their president, Phurba Sherpa, called on Governor Shriniwas Patil on 23 November. A press release informs that they submitted a memorandum against the writ petition filed in the Supreme Court by the Association of Old Settlers of Sikkim [AOSS].
The association informed the Governor of its opposition to the arguments made out in writ petition and alleged that AOSS did not respond to their invitation to settle the matter amicably.
The release states that the Governor assured the association complete co-operation and further stated that he would intervene in the matter for the sake of maintaining communal harmony in the state.
The Governor also shared with the association the various initiatives proposed for the benefit of all Sikkimese like the formation of Sikkim Sports Academy.
The association also met Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and submitted a copy of the memorandum. The Chief Minister also assured the association that the Government of Sikkim has taken all steps to safeguard and protect the rights and privileges of all Sikkimese, the release states.
The Chief Minister further directed the association to be more vigilant against activities that could cause disharmony in the Sikkimese society.
DWAG has further lauded some of the works undertaken by the SDF government for the development of the state.
