24 hours of disturbing spike in criminal transgressions


A VIOLENT HOUSE BREAK-IN, BURGLARY, FATAL ACCIDENT AND THE EXPECTED SADA BOOKING…
GANGTOK, 07 Dec: Criminal activity and transgressions showed none of the midweek lethargy one would expect on a Wednesday, but instead spiked with to a disturbing degree. Thefts, a violent burglary, a fatal road accident involving teenagers and a drug-bust rounded up a rather lawless 24 hours today. And these are only incidents which could be confirmed.

STUDENTS KILLED IN ROAD MISHAP
Two school students were killed in a car accident at Bardang [between Rangpo and Singtam on NH 31A]. The incident took place in the morning at around 6:30 a.m., marking a foreboding start for the day. The vehicle the students were traveling in fell about 100 feet into the Teesta at Bardang.
According to the police, the vehicle, a Santro, was being driven by a minor, Sheikh Masoom, a 15-year-old from Singtam. He had taken the car out perhaps for a joyride with two of his friends, Md Aflat, 16 and Md Irfan, both reported to be Class VII students.
From Singtam, they drove to Bardang, about 4 kms away, and on the way picked up two more students - Hari Mali, 16, and Navodoz Giri, 15, both studying in Senior Secondary School, Singtam.
As per reports, it was on the return journey that the driver lost control and the vehicle fell into the Teesta killing Hari Mali and Navodoz. The other students on board have suffered fractures, it is reported.
ASSAULT, BREAK-IN AND ROBBERY AT 6TH MILE
A violent break-in has been reported from 6th Mile, Tadong [under Ranipool Thana] from the house of the East Zilla Adhakshya, Bimal Dawari, today.
According to the police, an unknown person approached the house with a knock on the door. The door was answered by a young girl who did not recognize him and upon being told that there was no one at home, he asked for a glass of water. When the girl returned with the water, he is reported to have knocked her unconscious after a scuffle. He is then alleged to have made away with gold ornaments, even snatching away the earrings the girl was wearing. Arrests are yet to be made in this connection.
THEFT IN LOWER LUING
Thefts and break-ins seem to have increased over the past few days. One such case has been reported from Lower Luing near Gangtok in the house of Kumar Bhattarai, yesterday.
According to reports, the incident took place on 06 December and the miscreants are reported to have broken into the house and made away with cash, gold jewelry and a video camera. Besides, some important documents have also been reported missing.
In this connection, the Sadar police has rounded up three suspects from the area around the nearby Ban Jhankri Falls. These three were engaged by the complainant on contractual works and are reported to have been on the verge of absconding when they were picked up. Interrogation is underway to ascertain their culpability in the crime.
SADA BOOKING IN GANGTOK
Arrests under the Sikkim Anti Drugs Act, 2005 continue with the Sadar police apprehending yet another offender. Akash Biswakarma was arrested by the Sadar police personnel after he was located and identified by personnel of the Deorali Police Outpost at Amdo Golai, Tadong on 06 December.
Sadar police rushed to the spot and upon conducting a search of the accused found him to be in possession of contraband substances. These included 139 capsules of Spasmo-Proxyvon and another 54 capsules of N-10. The accused, a 22 year old resident of Ray Mindu, East Sikkim, has been arrested.
