Free Fibroscan camp held at STNM Hospital

GANGTOK, 28 Apr: A free Fibroscan camp was held in the STNM hospital from 23-25 April. A similar camp was held earlier in February this year. 406 individuals took benefit from this camp, informs Dr. Suresh Rasaily [Gastroenterologist, STNM Hospital].
A press release informs that Fibroscan is a new technology which is a screening tool to look into the stiffness of the liver which is a measure of the health of the organ. Being a non-invasive technique it serves as an alternate to doing a liver biopsy. This technology is available in very few hospitals in India and a single scan could cost anywhere between Rs 3000 to Rs 5000.
Individuals who consume alcohol or are suffering from different forms of Hepatitis or Non Alcoholic Fatty liver disease were able to benefit from the camp.
Also, on 26 April the 7th scientific session was held for the doctors of STNM hospital which was addressed by eminent Gastroenterologist from Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi, Dr Anil Arora who spoke on the recent advances in Gastroenterology like capsule endoscopy, the release informs. He also spoke on the benefits of a fibroscan and gave an update on the management of Alcoholic liver disease.
The session was chaired by Secretary, Health Department, Dr K Bhandari and had participants from STNM hospital. The session was moderated by Principal Chief Consultant, Dr Namgyal T Sherpa while the welcome address was delivered by Medical Superintendent, Dr Yogesh Verma.
The follow-up free fibro scan camp shall be held in the month of September /October this year, it is informed.
