GANGTOK: Uttam Rai of Chumbung, West Sikkim, a member of the Indian U-15 team, currently training at the IMG Academy in Florida, USA, scored his second hat-trick in a match against IMG U-18 on 29 March. Uttam’s 3-goal haul earned his team a 3-0 win over his seniors.
Earlier, on 26 March, Uttam’s 4-goal deluge made India U-15 setup a 7-0 victory over Florida U-15. Apart from Uttam, a goal each was scored by Alien Diory, Germanpeet and Lalmohana.
Uttam was selected by Reliance for sports scholarship early last year and he was placed in Florida on a 9-month training camp.
He was first noticed in the “Search for More Bhaichungs” scheme of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department and selected to study and train at Namchi Sports Hostel in 2007-08.
While playing for Sikkim at Subroto Mukherjee Cup in Delhi, his talent was noticed and was picked up on scholarship by Air Force, New Delhi in 2009.
