GANGTOK, 07 Feb: Free Winter Coaching organized by the Sikkim Lepcha Youth Association [SLYA] Central Executive Committee, Gangtok for the students belonging to poor and BPL families from all over the state concluded on 04 February. The valedictory function of the coaching classes which had begun on 18 December last year was held at TNSS school auditorium on 05 February.
A press release informs that this year there were 246 enrollments in both Class X and XII; there were 18 Teachers from in and around Gangtok who supported this noble cause. The Association has been conducting such coaching classes since 1996-97 where the number of enrollments have been increasing every year, it is informed.
Started mainly for Lepcha students, the Association decided to provide this opportunity to students from other communities as well who cannot avail such classes in rural areas since the last three or four sessions, it is mentioned.
The valedictory function was attended by Speaker, State Legislative Assembly, KT Gyaltsen Lepcha along with various officials from the Lepcha community, members of Sikkim Lepcha Association (Tarzum), and members of District and Village level branches of the Sikkim Lepcha Youth Association, Parents of the students and former and present students.
The programme saw various cultural dances, poetry and other items performed by the students. The programme also highlighted the contributions of various well-wishers of the Association and its activities.
Mr Gyaltsen in his address urged the students to make education an integral part of life and not just for securing jobs. He also stressed on the role of education in life. Later he announced a grant of Rs. 50000 to the Association. The Speaker further announced a reward for the student who secures the highest marks from this’s year coaching class, the release mentions.
Sikkim Lepcha Youth Association Central Executive Committee has thanked all the well-wishers who have supported the Association directly or indirectly namely the Education department, Principal and staffs T.N.S.S. School, all the respected donors, Namgyal Lepcha [Advisor SLYA], Dupden Lepcha [Chief Adm of this session] and all the respected Teachers of this session.
