Fire claims two children in South Sikkim

NAMCHI, 27 May: Tragedy struck South Sikkim yesterday as two children were killed in a fire on Monday evening at Upper Remang village near Tingley-Bermiok under Tingley-Remang Gram Panchayat Unit in South Sikkim.
At around 5:30 p.m. on Monday a fire broke out in the house of Prem Bahadur Gurung which razed his house to the ground. His two children- six year old Merina Gurung and 8 month old Anish Gurung - were trapped inside the house and died in the fire.
The parents were away at the time of the fire; while the mother Martha Subba had gone to collect firewood the father had gone to fix a damaged water supply pipeline. On their return, they found their house on fire but could do little since there are no other houses nearby. Before the rest of the village found out about the fire and came to help, the house had been completely burnt. Police have registered the case and investigation has begun.
Today, a team from the District Administration headed by SDM HQ, Sandup Bhutia, DPO Disaster Management Cell, Pempa Norbu also visited the family and inspected the place of incident. SDM HQ, Mr. Bhutia informed that the administration has released immediate relief to the deceased family and has also asked the concerned panchayat to oversee the release of ex-gratia to the affected family.
