Core Group chaired by CS to oversee smooth conduct of elections

GANGTOK, 06 Apr: A Core Group of 9 Secretary level officers has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary in order to have a better grip and unbiased assessment of the on-going preparation for twin elections in the State.
The Group has met twice formally, the last meeting being on 05 April apart from other informal interactions.
An official release informs that the exercise has enabled the Government to identify and resolve vital issues connected to elections, such as manpower hiccups in a few sub-divisions, telecommunications, unhindered road availability, smooth water and power supply, easy availability of POL and last, but not the least, effective and visible patrolling and policing.
Apart from this, new experiments like Web Casting of about 100 Polling Booths would be possible throughout the State for the first time.
In addition, a senior officer of the Office of the CEO takes active part in the meetings to apprise everyone regarding the Election Commission of India’s instructions as also to make request for any additional aid from the State Government.
The Core Group has also ensured that NH 31A and other major State roads are kept free from any impediments and encumbrances and that ongoing repairs/widening works would come to a standstill during the period, 10 – 12 April, 2014 so as to facilitate the election process in a level playing field situation, the release informs.
