NAMCHI, 22 Jan: The Namthang Block Administrative Center today felicitated 46 Panchayats, including 3 Zilla Panchayats of Namthang-Rateypani constituency, in recognition of their “selfless services and contributions towards the general public”. The felicitation was held at a special picnic organised by the BAC for the panchayats and BAC staff at Kopchey-Mamring in South Sikkim. The picnic was also attended by the area MLA, Minister Tilu Gurung, former Minister DP Kharel and BDO Namthang, Navin Sewa.
Addressing the occasion, Ms. Gurung appreciated the works and achievements of felicitated panchayats. The term of the present panchayats is nearing its end, it may be recalled, with elections expected in April.
Ms. Gurung highlighted that the pachayats of Namthang-Rateypani constituency had been cooperative and pro-people since the beginning of their term and achieved substantial developmental gains for the area.
She also pointed out that not all the sitting panchayats might receive party nominations in April especially since this time 50% of the seats are to be reserved for women against the 40% reservation under which the last panchayat elections were held.
She called on all the sitting panchayats to take this initiative of the government positively and urged them to continue to work for the people at their respective levels.
The Minister also appreciated the work of the Namthang BDO for the development of Namthang GPU said that all the people, panchayats along with the departmental officers should work together to achieve the target of becoming the best constituency of the state.
The programme was also addressed by the BDO and was also attended by the officers from the various departments.
