MANGAN, 12 Oct: Disbursement of relief for houses damaged in the 18 September earthquake is underway in Chungthang Sub-Division and 90% of compensation to affected families in Chungthang and Lachung has been completed while the process continues in Lachen. The disbursement for Chungthang, Pegong and Bop wards was conducted yesterday with the area MLA, TW Lepcha, in attendance along with the North Zilla Adhakshya, Khamsoong Lepcha.
Mr. Khamsoong Lepcha informed that the survey of damage to land holdings is underway by the Land Revenue Department and that relief will be disbursed shortly. Similarly, Power Minister, the Dzongu MLA, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, also disbursed damage compensation for Shipgyer GPU in Upper Dzongu, North Sikkim.
Meanwhile at Chungthang, the Gumpa committee along with the public shifted the belongings of the monastery, including the statue, to a safer location in a nearby house in the monastery campus.
The committee members along with the Zilla Adhakashya, carried out the work yesterday as the monastery has suffered major damages and protection work is required at the earliest.
Also on the day, the area MLA disbursed relief grant cheques for house damage at Singhik-Sentam, Ringhim-Nampatam, Malling GPUs and MNP wards of Mangan Bazaar in the presence of ward Panchayats, MNP Councilors and officials of the Land Revenue Department.
In his address, the MLA assured that none of the affected people will be left out from the relief process. He stressed that the earthquake was not caused by Hydel Projects and pointed out that earthquakes were natural disasters which nobody could control. The State Govt is trying its best to help the people recover from the destruction, he added.
