GANGTOK, 29 Aug: The much-liked Zilla Adhyaksha [South], Ravi Chandra Gurung, was killed in a road accident at Dharan in the Sunchari district of Nepal at around midnight last night. He was reportedly travelling back to Siliguri after attending to some personal work at Dharan when the mishap occurred.
The District Collector [South], AK Singh, coordinated with the Deputy Superintendent of Police and officials of the District Administration at Sunchari to enquire after the mishap and have the dead body of the deceased brought back.
As per the DC, the Adhyaksha was returning when his vehicle crashed into a parked truck. In the accident, the left side of the vehicle, the side where the Adhyaksha was sitting, was completely pulverized.

As per the DC, the Adhyaksha was returning when his vehicle crashed into a parked truck. In the accident, the left side of the vehicle, the side where the Adhyaksha was sitting, was completely pulverized.
He informed that as per information received by him, the Adhyaksha sustained multiple injuries and was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital where the doctor on duty declared him brought dead. The driver has also sustained injuries and is under medical treatment at present. Only the two of them were on board the vehicle at the time, it is learnt.
The DC further informed that the post mortem was carried out this afternoon at Dharan and the body released. The dead body was dispatched at around 3 PM and is expected to reach his native village Yangyang tonight.
Mr Singh informed that as per the DSP and the district administration officials at Dharan, the cause of the accident has not yet been established but preliminary investigation suggests that the driver did not see the parked truck and crashed into it in high speed.
Soon after hearing of the news, Zilla Upadhyaksha [South], Himal Tamang, rushed to Dharan early this morning and is escorting the dead body of the Adhyaksha back to Sikkim.
The Upadhyaksha, while speaking to NOW! over the phone, said that the news has shocked the entire district and has cast a pall of gloom. The sudden death of the Zilla Adhakshya was a great loss for the people of South District, he said, stressing that the departed Adhyaksha was a hard worker who always prioritized the interests of the people over all else.
On behalf of all the panchayats of south district, he also conveyed his deep condolences to the bereaved family.
Condolences have also come in from the Raj Bhavan. Governor BP Singh has deeply mourned the passing away of the South Zilla Adhyaksha and offered his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Similarly, a shocked Sikkim Democratic Front has also expressed its deep grief on the death.
The party observed a two-minute silence to pray for the departed soul during a condolence meeting held here at the party office today.
An SDF press release issued by its publicity secretary, Amber Rai, informs that the sudden death of Mr Gurung was a big loss to the party and the people of the State.
