CM inaugurates degree college for West Sikkim, Kyongsa to be developed as Education Hub

GYALSHING, 28 June: Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today dedicated the Government Degree College at Kyongsa here to the people of West Sikkim. On the final day of his West Sikkim tour, the CM delivered on an assurance that Gyalshing would get a degree college this academic session itself.
The college is situated around one km away from Gyalshing Bazaar, and as he inaugurated the new facility, the CM announced that the area will now be developed as an education hub. It already has a Girls Senior Secondary School and Kyongsa today received a degree college as well. Soon, a nursing institute, an ITI and a livelihood school will also be added to the bouquet of options for higher education available here, the CM announced.

It was now important for the people to encourage their children to grab the new options for learning opened in the area and the students to feel inspired to learn well, the CM stressed.
A college at Gyalshing has remained a long-pending demand of the people of the district. The CM had green-flagged the project on 08 June earlier this month and the Department moved fast to make it a reality within little over a fortnight.
Of course, the college will function from a temporary accommodation for now, but a 30 acre plot has been identified nearby for development as a campus. Work on it will begin shortly, it was announced today.
Admission forms for the new college will be distributed from 04 July onwards and classes will start on 22 July, the CM announced. The college is affiliated to the Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University and will offer general and honours courses in history, political science, economics, English, physical education, sociology, education, geography and languages in Nepali, Bhutia, Lepcha and Limboo.
HRDD Joint Director [Higher Education], YP Nepal has been appointed Principal of the college.
Addressing the students at Kyongsa Girls Senior Secondary School, the CM encouraged students to study hard and pursue higher education by taking full benefits of all the opportunities and facilities created for them by the State Government.
Commenting that while infrastructural development and the creation of opportunities has marched strong in Sikkim, there has not been a matching paradigm shift in people’s mentalities to claim ownership of public infrastructure and pursue shared development. It will be for the young to deliver in this count and secure Sikkim the services of a strong civil society, the CM said to the students.
He also endorsed the demand for a Commerce stream at the Kyongsa Girls SSS and assured to work on all other demands of the school and the people on priority and need basis.

  2. Ok ...so the CM is again back to trying to snub Prof Lama......the CM should at first try to appreciate what SU has been doing since its inception with no help from the state govt. If Dr. Chamling is a visionary as his supports on Fb claim him to be, then he should be able to look past Dr. Lama and focus on what the Central University has turned the colleges of Sikkim into.....a new work culture has been put in place, where every body strives to give the best! This is the only state where the land to a University has been put on hold all because of some personal grudge!!! The CM sud be now able to review the status of the colleges under NBU and now under SU!!! The Semester system has been in place and students now feel like they are going to a college and benefitting from it!!!! Prof Lama may have his draw backs but a person of the CM's stature should realise that Lama is indeed working for the betterment of the Sikkimese tho he not being one.....or is the CM scared that the products of SU will emerge to be confident citizens there by questioning his hold on the state!!! Wake up CM sahab and do what is right and best for yr people!!

  3. what crap? please go and find out for yourself what MR.Lama is doing for the Sikkimese people and towards improving the education system before you make all this tall claims about him and No!!! I am not trying to defend the CM and I really don't know what going on between the two( not a big fan of in both cases). By the way Mr.Lama is getting paid to do the job and VVIP status???He better do justice to it as the youth won't tolerate the whims and fancies of individuals at the helm of power and authority.
