GANGTOK, 16 Nov: Dzongri Sporting Club veterans’ team will take on Jalpaiguri veterans in the first match of the Veteran’s Football Tournament held in memory of international footballer from Sikkim, Late Pem Dorji at Mela Ground, Kalimpong on Thursday.
The 20-member Dzongri SC team is being led by renowned footballer, Chewang Paul Sangderpa, as the team captain. The team has respected senior players like Thakur Rai, Thupten Rapgyal, Shambhu Pradhan, Sonam Lepcha and Danne Bhutia.
A total of 19 teams are taking part in the tournament, which is being organised by Kalimpong Veteran’s Football Association. The tournament also has teams from Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan apart from other veteran teams from across the country and from the Darjeeling hills.
Speaking to NOW! today, Mr Sangderpa informed that the team went through a 15-day training camp at Paljor Stadium. He mentioned that after this preparation, the team is all set to give a good fight to its opponents.
He mentioned that it was a moment of pride for the team to play in the tournament dedicated to Late Pem Dorji.
If the Dzongri team wins its first match on Thursday, it will play the next match on 19 November.
The president of Dzongri SC, SP Gyamtso, extended his best wishes to the team and encouraged the team to play well in the tournament.
