Sikkim U-9 football team reaches BC Roy Memorial finals


GANGTOK, 25 Jan: Sikkim U-19 boys football team will clash against Haryana on 26 January in the Semi-Final (Orissa Chapter) match to be played at Cuttack, Orissa in the 48th Junior National Football Championship for Dr. B.C. Roy Trophy, informs a press release.
In the other semi-final match Kerala will meet UP. Sikkim has reached the Semi-Final after defeating J&K by 2-0 margin and after both matches with Chhattisgarh and Gujarat ended in a goalless draw, the release informs.
The tournament was instituted by the AIFF in 1962. It was known as the Junior Nationals and was restricted to boys under 19 years. The Indian Football Association (IFA) of West Bengal presented this trophy in memory of the former Chief Minister of Bengal, Dr BC Roy, the release mentions.
The then president of the IFA, M Dutta Ray also presented the runners up trophy, known as the Mohan Dutta Ray trophy. The first Junior Nationals were held in Burnpur and Bengal emerged as the champions beating Orissa in the finals, the release adds. Bengal is the most successful team in this competition, being a sixteen-time winner and five-time runners up.
