OT welcomes Lokpal Bill

GANGTOK, 02 Jan: Rajya Sabha MP from Sikkim, OT Lepcha, extending his support to the Lokpal Bill, put forth his views in the Parliament on 30 Dec on the issue of the appointment of Central Bureau of Investigation [CBI] Director and placing CBI under another body.

According to a press release, the MP welcomed the appointment system of the CBI Director amended through the Lokpal Bill which will have a committee comprising of the Prime Minister, leader of the opposition and the Chief Justice of India on whose advice the appointment would be made.
Apart from this, the MP also stated that ‘placing of CBI under another body would not be right and this idea has been upheld by the apex court of the country in its various judgements that insuring CBI independence is critical’.
He further added that ‘bringing a new law under Article 253 of the Constitution to honour an international agreement sends out a very strong message to the international community about the level of importance that our country attaches to the issue of eradication of corruption’.
