GANGTOK, 23 Aug: “We play life”. With this ideology, five students from the remote village of Lingmoo ‘Janta Colony’ in South Sikkim, formed a music band. Though the task was not easy, with finances their main problem and the elders least supportive, they have put one together.
15 months since the idea was born, dedication and tremendous efforts put up by Milan Subba, Deven Thapa, Tshering Pintsho Bhutia, Ashish Dass and Karun Thapa, they have established a full-fledged musical band “Zenith Band”- on 17 September, 2010.
“Though we grew up in a remote village, we had a strong passion to form a band equivalent to those established in urban areas,” said Deven, rhythm guitarist of the band, who is pursing a BCA course in Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology at Mazhitar at present.
According to him, the main achievements of the band since its formation was to bag an offer to play background music for the constituency level music competition “Prativa ko Khoj” at Yangang in December 2010.
“We received huge applause from the audience and the village elders started understanding and encouraging us,” says Deven, adding that now, the band has performed at several village-level programmes.
Not only this, the Zenith Band has successfully organized a music workshop and has 20 youngsters as trainees under it at present.
“Realizing our positive thinking, the village elders are now fully convinced that we are creating a musical environment in the area, which has motivated the youth towards music rather than addiction and other vices,” he says proudly.
Deven says, “Till date our achievements have come from our own efforts and dedication.” He adds that if they are given support either by the government or by some NGOs, they can do much more for the State and can set a good role model for the youngsters of other villages.
The band mainly performs folk songs but can adjust to any form of music as per the demand. Gaunley jiwan, the band’s own compositions has been able to touch the hearts of several music lovers of South Sikkim.
The band members are: Lead Guitarist- Anow, Rythem Guitarist- Deven, Bassist- Meen [Milan], Drummer- Shakung, Male Vocalist- Ashis and Female Vocalist- Mamta
