GANGTOK, 25 Aug: The Sikkim Democratic Front countered today that the Nagarik Adhikar Suraksha Sangathan Sikkim [NASSS] was a “100 percent” political organization of some “negative-thinking, short-minded and corrupt retired bureaucrats and failed political aspirants moving ahead with only resentment in their minds”.
In a press release issued today, the party has claimed that this organization was formed with the sole intention of tarnishing the image and reputation of the State.
Referring to its Upper Burtuk MLA, PS Tamang, as “disgruntled”, the party says that it has made Mr. Tamang a three-term Minister and four-time MLA, but he is now sulking because his selfish interests have not been fulfilled.
Meanwhile, defending the Public Order Bill of the State Government, the party contends that the Bill was meant to “safeguard peace, tranquility, communal harmony in the State as well as to guide the younger generation in the right path”. NASSS deviously does not want this and has thus tagged it “Black Bill”, the release states.
It further claims that those who protest the Bill harbour “ill-intention to ruin Sikkim”. In reality, it claimed, the party had proposed a “pro-people White Bill” which will neither debar any political party or activist from their right to expression or restricts the people’s fundamental rights.
The party further clarified that the Bill was meant to “restrict the drugs and narcotics business in Sikkim, bar entry of kids below 18 years in hotels, bar, discotheques and FL price shops etc. and to check extortion in the name of political parties, organizations etc”.
Finally, the party maintained that the Government decided to withdraw the Bill to hold public debates, interactions and for mass publicity because some “negative elements” were misleading the people into believing otherwise.
